Yesterday, on June 9th, Siim Randoja, a member of the board of the Estonian Sports and Olympic Museum, ceremoniously presented the Estonian Sports Hall of Fame plaque to football player Mart Poom at the A. Le Coq Arena, recognizing his outstanding contribution to Estonian sport. The plaque was presented before the World Cup qualifier between Estonia and Norway.
“It was clear in the stadium how deep a mark Mart Poom has left on Estonian football, because people were cheering loudly at the moment of recognition,” said Siim Randoja, a member of the board of the Estonian Sports and Olympic Museum. “It is a great honor that we can celebrate such moments in front of a large audience,” added Randoja.
Each member of the Estonian Sports Hall of Fame, including Mart Poom, will receive his own personal display in the permanent exhibition of the Estonian Sports and Olympic Museum, which includes a video story projected on a wall-sized screen, a plaque and a biography on a computer console. The permanent exhibition also features Mart Poom's personal items from earlier times, such as his goalkeeper gloves, which visitors can view.
This year, in addition to Mart Poom, the athletes elected to the Estonian Sports Hall of Fame included athlete Laine Erik-Kallas and basketball player Martin Müürsepp, while sports journalist and commentator Lembitu Kuuse was elected as an influencer of sports. Other members of the Hall of Fame can be found on the sports museum's website or on site during museum opening hours.
The Estonian Sports Hall of Fame honors and highlights the most influential athletes and background figures in Estonian sports throughout history. In 2020, the committee selected 50 outstanding athletes and sports figures of the last century as the inaugural members of the Hall of Fame, and it is being expanded annually with 2-4 great figures of Estonian sports history whose careers have ended at least 5 years ago.
